Seems like I remember Bobchops, from ROCBATTLE. Anyway, I chose KutMastaChris. It sounds a bit more appealing and useable. I've never been one to focus so much on the mix. Unless the mix iz horrible, horrible, this iz about beat makers and producers, not engineers. I know of many great and classic albums, that didn't have pristine mixes....EPMD, WuTang, Mary J Blige, BDP, etc....all of their 1st albums didn't have the pristine or even great mixes, that are available today. The main importance iz, whether the product iz good or exceptional....I listened to both tracks, all the way thru, with an unbiased ear. Both are Kool...but, whatever the genre, one iz a little more appealing...and Kutmasta, just edged it out, by a hair. Peace & Love 2 Both ⭐

2 different schools of hip hop here. Bob's being more of a West Coast sound, and KutMasta's being more of an East Coast classic vibe. Which beat do I personally like better? I like the composed West Coast production more, but the East Coast beat is still very good. Even though I am voting for Bob's, it does not take away the fact that KutMasta's was a great beat as well. Bob's beat is more clear sounding, so I like the mix better, Kut's was "loud" and that's it. The mix on that could be much better, everything sounded very "midrangy". Which I know the plan was to make it sound classic, old school, and lofi. But was executed poorly in my opinion. Points for improving the East Coast beat's mix. 1. Get "Decimort 2" and put that on each element of the mix to get a vintage sampler sound. 2. Recreate a classic SSL or Neve console in your DAW. So my suggestion is Brainworx SSL 4000 E channel over the channels, townhouse bus comp on the master bus. This is to recreate the sound of mixing through a classic SSL console that would have been used at the time, or you can use the Lindell 80 Series channel / bus over the whole mix for the classic Neve vibe as Tribe called Quest had used in the "low end theory" album. Try to mix for clarity, as they would have. Then sum the mix into a slate virtual tape machine for "printing to tape". Then just slap a limiter on it and call it a day. It should sound legitimately retro, classic, but clear loud and banging. You could also put Izotope vinyl after the tape machine before limiting in order to make it sound like the beat was mastered to vinyl. Just some pointers. I do like the East Coast beat, but the mix is what killed it for me. Follow these suggestions, and that will change. Great battle.
