I've been making beats regularly for 15+years exclusively for one group, although I loved what the artist did over my beats, it never really gathered much of any notoriety. Everyone kept telling me i should be selling them online. I never really gave that an honest thought, because of the fact that my beats contained samples that were uncleared - along with knowing there was no way I was ever gonna be able to hunt down the original source of vinyl from which I once upon a time lifted that sample. Or, at the very least, the monumental task of doing so was not flattering enough for me to take my music online - thinking that any and all samples had to be addressed, if not actually or eventually cleared (Yes, as a youngster, this was an incorrect fact I believed). That is what I told myself. Because maybe I was just too scared to try? I dont really know
It wasn't 'til I hit some hard times that i decided I was just gonna try it. I only used the Free membership options on all the platforms I used and never paid any of them a single cent. Because, after all, if the music is good enough, why should that even matter? Right? This is what I kept telling myself. I listened to a few other artists tracks they posted - some that were doing very well in terms of sells, and others that have never made a single sell. I wasn’t too impressed with either of them. Stylistically speaking, wasn’t anything special. Both from major sellers and nobodys. The only difference being, that I could tell, was the major sellers had superior sound quality and louder mixes but underneath all that was shitty substance. All around. Most of what I heard was either shit or not for me. There were just about a handful of producers (“producers”, not “beat makers” see what I’m doing??) who I could agree were much more talented than myself. I liked these dudes a lot.
So after uploading a batch of beats
Being an introvert, it was a rude awakening. I studied marketing/how to sell but keeping at it has been rough. I've learned I am not business savvy enough to sell... anything really. I'm just a musician! I dont want my skills to go to waste for the sake of being heard. That's all counterproductive. We are fighitng the wrong fight, my friends
